... but the house opposite ours has lost a few tiles, some are strewn across the road and some are perched precariously on the edge of the roof, very dangerous. The storm arrived in this area some time after midnight, I was asleep but woke up from it, it was SO loud - the wind and rain. Our main street is closed off because a huge tree has fallen across it and traffic signs are strewn across the road too apparently. It's pretty much the same all over the south coast today, and lo and behold, we are getting another bashing tonight according to the weather reports.
Of course this didn't stop us from going out to IKEA this morning, there was a lull between the wind and rain and we took advantage of it. The drive there took an hour as usual then we spent an hour in the store and as we came out the rain had started up again, but we decided to run to the car because it wasn't likely to stop anytime soon. We got soaked through everything, even my underwear got soaked. The drive home wasn't too bad, the wind picked up as we reached to coast and we could feel it grabbing the car but we drove carefully and made it home in about an hour. I am SO glad we went, I got everything I had on the list, 5 baskets for the bookshelf to de-clutter, another basket for the walk-in closet to store gloves, scarfs, hats and mittens, a new lamp and lamp shade for the bedroom, new pads for the dining chairs, white fabric so I can make new curtains for the bedroom and some batteries.

I have mentioned that we live on a tiny little peninsula haven't I? It's really narrow, I can see the sea from my kitchen and living room window (it's right outside) and from the other side of the house I can see straight down a road and at the end of the road I can see the sea again. That's how narrow it is. Plus we haven't got any trees to speak of here, it's all flat (but that may be a blessing in this situation actually?) Our "only" hope is that the houses around us will take the brunt on the winds because they are slightly taller, but because of the courtyard we have on both sides it's probably going to make it worse and come at us from all directions. I know that litter that gets caught up in the courtyard on the front of the houses just goes round and round in a storm, like a mini tornado sort of. I'd hate to see that effect when the storm arrives... My main concern is that the roof will go, or that the roof slabs will lift off and end up flying around out there, or the digital dish. I'm going to pack a little bag with our important stuff (passports, toiletries, change of clothing) and keep with me in the house - just in case. I'm under strict orders to do this from higher up's (no that is not the Mister, LOL) so I'd better get started as soon as we get back from our grocery shop.
I've been busy this afternoon, our office/guest room needed a bit of an over haul (it's the room we've least decorated) and I finally got around to doing it. I've had this fabric for a while - it's white with large green palm leaves, and today I decided to make a pair of curtains out of it. So I got my sewing machine out and did just that, only took a couple of hours as the style isn't complicated at all just straight forward floor length drapes. Then I made a new cover for the pad (seat) of the wicker chair we're using as the office chair, and a cushion cover. As well as took apart a small glass table we have in there and painted (with a roller) the back of the glass table top a spring green shade (to match the curtain pattern). I don't really like glass table tops so this is better, but we're replacing it anyway... just as soon as we get to IKEA.
In FL at Target I saw these white curtains that I absolutely fell in love with, but I thought they were a bit pricey ($24.99 for one panel). They're not on the website anymore so I can't link to them, but the were a bit sheer with some elasticated "ruched" detailing in sort of diamond shapes (SO difficult to explain!) on the top 1/3 part of the panel, so my mission at the moment is to find something similar (but cheaper) over here for our bedroom.
I'm an IKEA family member and got a coupon in the mail the other day - spend £60 and get £10 off. Not bad and I think I might actually use it. Hopefully we can go to IKEA soon as not only do I want to get a new side table for the office, I'd also like to get four baskets for our bookshelf and a few other bits and pieces.
Is there life on Mars?

Regardless of the answer I have to say that this photo is pretty creepy and interesting at the same time (follow the link and click on the photo to view a larger image...)
Someone's writing a biography of your life (to date). What is the best/worst chapter of the book?
Submitted by Ross.
I'm going to start with the worst because that way I end this entry with something good.
The worst chapter would probably be High School, I was never one of the popular girls but I wasn't unpopular either. I guess I was right down the middle. Girls can be so mean to each other sometimes. There's so much riding on who you're friends with, who you hang out with, is seen with, what you're wearing, how you look, how you do your make up, who you're talking to. A lot of girls gossip and spread evil rumors, thankfully I was never a victim of that but I know people who were and I always felt so sorry for them. Me and my friends purposely tried to avoid unnecessary attention, because when you stand out you're an easy target. I found it very stressful, always having to think about what you said or wore or did because if you did something the rubbed another (popular) girl up the wrong way, you were doomed pretty much. And to a teenage girl, that seemed like one of the worst things that could happen to you in School.
The best chapter (apart from now - as it's ongoing) would probably be college. I always liked going to school and learn things but college was great. Everyone of my lecturers were wonderful, there was so much freedom. I took some art and photography classes as well as classes for my major, I loved it. I made some great friends that I'm still in touch with today, and we were all there for the same reason - we wanted to be there. That's a big difference compared to High School when a lot of people are only there because they have to. As I didn't have any family in CA and my school didn't have any dorms I liked I chose to get my own apartment (like most of my friends), my friends and I used to have parties on weekends and bbq's down the beach. Go up to LA and Santa Monica and shop and visit art museums. We had so much fun!!!
I ordered three books from amazon.co.uk on Saturday and they were shipped yesterday, I can't wait! Hopefully that feeling will last because I hate the fact that I've stopped taking time out to read as much as I used to. I love reading. The Mister can't understand why I ordered the books I did...
... he thinks they'll be too upsetting to read, and I'm sure he's right about them being emotional and upsetting to me. But I think it's part of the history of the world and important. And I do read a lot of other things as well, I read pretty much anything. This is what I feel like reading about at the moment, I go through different periods and when I've exhausted all the books I find interesting on that topic, I move on. Perhaps after this I might like to read romance novels, who knows?
It's still raining here, I don't think it'll ever stop. The Mister and I are off to do our weekly grocery shop when he comes home, he should be home much earlier today. Fingers crossed. Our freezer is nearly empty, it's taken a while to do but so worth it, I don't like to buy things and then not eat it, just leave it in the freezer for months and months on end.
We had the last of the chicken breasts for dinner yesterday, the hot dogs the day before (and with them the hot dog buns I had frozen) a couple of steaks the other day and now there's only a packet of ground beef in there (for which I have plans next week) and a hamburger that I can't eat because I broke out in hives last Sunday straight after dinner, it was like 2 minutes and *poof* I was itchy and had stomach cramps. I guess there was something in them that didn't agree with me, too bad because they were good and I could have had them again.
Anyway, there's also a loaf of sliced white bread in there and some rolls for the Mister's packed lunch, oh and a bag of fries because that's always good to have at home, and the turn around on fries in this house is pretty fast for some reason.
Having just read all that I realize that it sounds like we eat a lot of convience food but we really don't. I usually cook from scratch because I like to know what's in the things I put in my mouth and I like cooking. But on the days when the Mister is working odd hours and we don't have time to cook a big meal before he has to leave for work (ex. when he has to leave at 12:30 or 2:30pm for a 10h + shift) it's good to have something like hamburgers and fries or hot dogs to just throw in a pan and it's done.
Looking out the window though, I can't say that I look forward to going anywhere today, it wouldn't be so bad if it was just rain but it's windy too.I'd much rather stay in and watch a movie with the Mister this evening. However, unless we want soup and grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner I'd better stop thinking about it.
Last night, after we'd been asleep for about an hour or so, the Mister sits up (he's on his front) and says straight out, very clearly...
- Awww you're sooo cute!
His face is turned towards me and he's using the same tone of voice and infliction as he does when he says that to me while he's awake. I blink a couple of times and ask him ..
- Are you talking to me?
He nods and says ..
- Of course I'm talking to you...
Then he lays back down and continues sleeping. It was SO funny and sweet :-)
The Mister just called to let me know he is on his way home and to ask me if I wanted to go to McDonalds for a shake or something just so I get out a bit since I've been at home all day! It must be karma (thinking of my earlier post today)
Now I'm off to get ready.
- I got up this morning and ironed the Misters shirts, all six of them, all the same, how boring - I like some sort of variety when I iron, it makes it a more exciting experience.
- Then I made the Mister his dinner to bring to work - Something I don't normally do but I felt like being nice this morning.
- After that I folded the laundry and paired socks - It was all his clothes.
- Directly after that I made his lunch to eat before he left for work - While he ate that I did the washing up, when I'm nearly done he brings in his plate and glass and I finish the dishes.
- Then he's off to get changed into his work clothes and announces that he's going in early to work so he can go into town and pick up some contact lens fluid because he's nearly out.
- And he's off...
- Now I'm going to eat something because it's 11:54 and I still haven't had breakfast, just a cup of tea. I tend to forget to eat sometimes when I'm busy. It's not good but I get so wrapped up in stuff that eating doesn't end up at the top of my list of priorities. The Mister did suggest he'd make a McDonalds run but I declined.
- After I've uploaded this and had lunch I'm washing the floor in the kitchen and bathroom, and cleaning the bathroom.
